Just testing the iPad app for Wordpress, looks pretty slick and responds well.

Typing I have found to be a little sensitive but I am sure I will get used to it in time!

About a month or two ago I was given a Mac in work to use to replace my shitty old Windows laptop.

I have to admit I was very dubious at the start because I have a deep hatred for the Mac fanboy culture (and I still do) however I was quickly won round by the Mac's responsive hardware and slick OS.

It didn't take long to realise why some people where very fanboyish about the whole thing (there is still no excuse for it though!) and I starting considering changing my home setup to a Mac.

The main reason why I didn't was because my Windows machine is relatively new and fairly bitching, it cost a lot and I would like to get a lot of use out of it.

That and the fact that Windows is a fine operating system for what I use it for, sure there are annoyances but there is nothing I personally need to do that Windows Vista couldn't do for me.

My stance changed about 4 hours ago however whenever after installing the latest service pack  the night before (how ruddy cavalier of me!) my computer refused to start. Long story short the service pack seemed to have half installed and borked the OS completely, I ran different repairs on it but to no avail.

Now I am in the process of downloading a live Linux CD in order to run and then backup a couple of files/folders that I would like but are deemed not important enough to have running on my normal backups. Once this is done I will be installing Windows 7 onto the machine and starting from scratch.

I have played about with Windows 7 and like it, but the very first time it gives me any amount of crap I think the back will be broken and an order will be being placed with Apple.

Bloody Windows...

Well everyone else seems to have at least one blog post talking about the add-ons they use so I thought I would too!

I have used the names exactly as they appear so searching for these should be a breeze should you want to download and try them out for yourself.

In alphabetical order...

  • Download Statusbar - Because I hated the default window that popped up.
  • Firebug - Pretty much essential for any web developer.
  • Google Gears - They make certain stuffs go faster!
  • HTML Validator - Because I am too lazy to type validator.w3.org
  • Linky - A wonderful add-on that lets you select multiple links and open them in tabs
  • Photobucket Uploader - To allow me to quickly steal pictures.
  • ReloadEvery - Handy for tabs you need to reload periodically.
  • Save Images - Allows me to save all open images in tabs and stuff.
  • SEO For Firefox - Handy for SEO stuffs.
  • Tab Kit - Complete essential, this way I can have rows of tabs.
  • TwitterFox - What I use for viewing tweets online.
  • Ubiquity - A wonderful mashup tool that I don't use often enough.
  • Web Developer - Again, an essential add-on for any web developer.
  • YammerFox - So I can keep track at what the folks in work are talking about.

Until yesterday I also had Split Browser on there, I really liked the idea of being able to split my browser into 4 panels for viewing sites, but this add-on was just a little too buggy and in your face for my liking.

I would love to know if there is anything essential I am missing?

Personally speaking I barely have room on my RSS reader for any more web development / design blogs and I am running out of hours in the day to give all of the content I receive a proper read, so why would I dare to think that adding my own little stream of bloggy goodness into the fold is going to do anything other than get ignored after the first 10 minutes of me spamming it on twitter?

Well the short answer is because I can, with the wonders of wordpress and a decent hosting company I had the space made, the domain bought and paid for and the blog installed in literally 30 minutes (and that included checking my emails, other general internetting and changing a record on my eld vinyl player).

The slightly longer answer is that I have wanted to create something like this for a very long time, I love what I do and I have found that I like to write about things I love to do.  The main issue I have is that I love to do a lot of things, which means I love to write about a lot of things, which means I have my fingers in many pies, which means I often waste evenings doing things on no consequence on some of my smaller sites.  This all changed however when somehow I managed to convince the directors in my work that allowing me to write a web development blog would be an excellent objective for the year - which gave me an excellent incentive to actually do it.
